Jung, Mike. Unidentified Suburban Object. New York: Arthur A. Levine Books, 2016. This is a hilarious book. And a deeply authentic book – I think what I found most touching and real about this book wasn't the search for identity. Don't get me wrong. That's terrifically well done. It's the relationship between Chloe and her best friend Shelley. As Chloe's quest to understand her identity hits roadblocks and creates hard feelings for Chloe to understand – anger, frustration, loss – their friendship struggles. There is a bathroom reconciliation scene between Chloe and Shelley that I'm 100% sure Mike Jung looked into my memories and took. I'm kind of talking around Chloe's crisis because you MUST read this book to discover what she's got to deal with. The reveal is perfection. |
